Squares is not a one-day game
The classic version gets played on championship Sunday, but the exact same board works for any single game: a rivalry week match, a Thursday night game, a college bowl, or your local team's playoff run. All the board cares about is two teams and a score that ends in digits — every game has exactly one winning square per quarter.
The weekly routine
- After the game, note the four quarter winners and the final — the score panel highlights them for you.
- Press Reset numbers. The names stay, the numbers cover up, the board unlocks.
- Update the team names for next week's matchup.
- Let any newcomers claim open squares (or reshuffle everyone with a fresh random deal).
- Lock and reveal again before kickoff.
Because the board lives in your browser, your regular group's names survive every reset — the tedious part of a weekly game disappears. Use Copy share link each week to post the current board to the group chat.
Season-long scoring ideas
- Points streak — one point per quarter won; season champion takes the trophy.
- Perfect square — an extra point for anyone who wins the same square twice in a season.
- Rotating honors — each week's final-score winner picks the prize for the next week.
These are all just scoring rules your group agrees on — the tool tracks the board; you track the season table in your chat or a shared sheet.
Playoff weeks
Playoff games tend to draw bigger groups than week three. When the list outgrows the board, switch to the 100-square grid and give regulars first pick before opening it up, or bump “squares per person” down so everyone fits. For the final game of the season, many groups double the ceremony: print the board, pin it up, and let the reveal animation run on the biggest screen available.
Basketball works too — the same grid and the same last-digit rule. See the basketball squares guide for halftime scoring.
